| This combination of stylized vines and flowers with a pastoral scene is an example of nineteenth century work done at home by women of all ages. The making of useful and beautiful household articles provided the opportunity for creative expression, as well as instruction for girls in the many needle techniques required to keep house. A “rug” of this kind is unlikely to have been much used on the floor, but would more likely, have been found adorning the top of a table or chest. |
