Blue & White Crewel Pocket

Indigo dyed worsted wool thread on linen fabric
11.75 x 14.5 inches

Tie-on pockets like these were necessary to the eighteenth & early nineteenth century women’s wardrobe during a time when their clothes rarely had sewn-in pockets. This single pocket is made of linen fabric, embroidered with a typical 18th century design in worsted crewel yarn dyed in shades of blue with natural indigo and trimmed with blue and white checkered tape. The reverse is plain creamy white linen. We currently have two other examples of 18th century women's pockets: a pair in printed cotton & a single crewelwork pocket
